1- Why are SmartBells called Smart Bells?
In the beginning, there was SmartMoney, SmartTraveler, SmartThis, SmartThat... We knew the "Smart" nomenclature was definitely overused. But we also saw that the new invention was a quantum leap past dumbbells. So, we could not resist calling them SmartBells. In fact, they do positively affect your brain and neural pathways. There are literally an infinite number of ways to use them. SmartBells are like a musical instrument for the mind/ body and they do have a ring tone.
Now, for two esoteric questions:
2- Do SmartBells really cast the shadow of the infinity symbol?
Yes. We first noticedthis in our offices where SmartBells hung as mobiles on fish line. As the sun would set, overtime, we eventually noticed the mobile set was casting the shadow of an infinity symbol on my wall. You can see this for yourself by holding a SmartBell in the palm of you hand, front side up, shining a flashlight on it and rotating it. At the correct angle the shadow of the infinity symbol is cast.
3- Do SmartBells really embody one of the shapes of the universe predicted by the Theory of Relativity?
Yes. This was first observed by a math professor on the campus of Stanford University during an EPNL program. It was later confirmed and discussed in a meeting I had with Neil Degrasse Tyson, Executive Director of the Hayden Planetarium in NYC. If this topic is of interest to you, take a look at this link and the book "One Universe", by Neil Degrasse Tyson (see page 202).
4- How can I order SmartBells and their instructional DVD's?
You can order on our secure site by clicking here or by calling 1-800-485-0967.
5- How do SmartBells provide an effective workout?
The benefits of SmartBells come from the sophisticated yet simple circular movement patterns that are not dependent upon the amount of weight used. Elite athletes find benefits using SmartBells of every denomination. Exercises using SmartBells are similar to movements in yoga, martial arts and dance as well as sports such as tennis, golf, swimming and baseball. Little or no weight is used when participating in these activities. With SmartBells, circular and rotational movements works the entire body and all major muscle groups in concert. You can increase strength and endurance while improving flexibility, range-of-motion and balance.
6- How is using SmartBells different than traditional weights?
Using SmartBells "breaks the rules of traditional weight lifting". Briefly, the rules broken are:
a) The movements are circular as opposed to linear
b) You flow with gravity as opposed to push against it
b) Muscle groups are used synergistically and harmoniously as opposed be being "isolated"
c) Form and attention to movement are stressed over amount of weight used
d) The goal is to move "chi" more than to move muscle
e) You don't put the weight down between exercise and "break the flow"
f) You can workout with a partner or group in exercises that will build trust and teamwork
SmartBells are light weights that are used to facilitate flowing circular and rotational movements that allow many muscles to work in unison for a “full-body” workout. These intelligent movements develop what has become known as “functional fitness” … in other words, muscles are developed to help one perform better in sports as well as daily activities. Rather than focus on lifting more and more weight, you use the momentum of the light weight SmartBell to flow through an endless variety of movement patterns. SmartBells can be used to warm up, work out and cool down in a group or solo.
7- Which SmartBell (weight) is right for me?
For most people, the SmartBell Original (5 lb) is my recommended way to begin. It's an ideal weight for learning how to guide the SmartBell as you use its momentum to flow through movements. It is also the idea weight for team building workouts involving partners and groups. The SmartBell Original (12 lb) is significantly more challenging and intended for people who have a high fitness level and in some cases, might need to be used for fewer repetitions and less time.
The SmartBell Lite is great for anyone who would like to find the SmartBells' patterns of movement without the sensation of weight. They are recommended for kids, seniors, rehabilitation, and elite athletes looking for subtle patterning.
The versatile SmartBells Dual is used for partner training and stretching, personal training, physical therapy and rehabilitation. It also has applications for combat training such as wrestling and MMA or highly physical sports such as football and rugby. On a lighter note, the 3 lb Dual has many applications and allows an adult to be directly connected to a child for fitness activities.
The SmartBells PRO facilitates and promotes the concept of "Strength in Motion®". The PRO's have a wider grip and range in weight, from 10 to 72 lbs. These weights facilitate a larger arc than the SmartBells Original and can be used for traditional power-lifting movements or SmartBells circular movements. The 10 lb PRO makes these movements accessible to most people. The 24 - 72 lb should only be used by highly trained and fit individuals. This is a completely new training system that we feel will revolutionize strength training on all levels. For a more in depth description, see the Products page and the demonstration by Jeremy Levine in the first video on the Video page.

8- Which muscle groups do the Core Exercises incorporate?
The Core Exercises are designed to systematically work every major muscle group, beginning with a principal focus on the upper body, progressing towards the legs and closing with rotational movements and abdominal exercises.
9- What is the appropriate age to exercise with SmartBells?
SmartBells users range from 5 to over 90 years old. They are wonderful for children but the child must be mature enough to use them safely and not as a “toy”.
10- Is the SmartBells Core Exercise the only exercise I need?
Probably not. But, if it is the only exercise you are going to do there isn't much else that is more complete. SmartBells are a good combination with other aerobic exercise like walking, running or cycling. They are also a great complement to traditional weight lifting--between sets for flow and flexibility, or on your off-days.
11- Can I use SmartBells to exercise my legs?
Yes. SmartBells lunges and Plie Squats provide excellent leg workouts. If you are already “physically fit”, you may wish to upgrade your Plie Squats to Jump Squats. Some elite athletes add Jump Squats to their exercise program to develop explosive power.
12- Can I workout with SmartBells everyday?
Absolutely! You can even keep the SmartBell by your computer (at work or at home) and this will make it easier to find at least a few minutes each day to do a SmartBells workout. Two minutes everyday is extremely beneficial; over the course of a year you will have done more than 30,000 repetitions of sophisticated mind-body movements. You will look and feel better by simply exercising for just 10 to 15 minutes per day, 4 to 5 times a week.
13- Do I have to do the SmartBells Core Exercises?
We recommend that you learn the movements in the Core Exercises. Afterwards, we encourage you to create custom workouts that are fun and focus on your personal goals.
14- How do I clean my SmartBell?
Simply use a soft cloth and wash your SmartBell with soap and water. Do not use harsh solvents or abrasive cleaners. Towel dry.
